Horace Hubert “Bud” McNown was born June 22, 1926, to Glen Adelbert McNown and Edna Mae (McAlister) McNown in Belknap Community in Moline, Kansas. When Horace was a youngster he went hunting with a relative. The relative referred to Horace as “my buddy.” From that day forward Horace went by Buddy until he graduated from high school.
Bud graduated from Moline High Class of 1944. He enlisted in the Army in November 1944. After Bud completed basic he was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in August 1946. Bud returned to Moline after leaving the Army.
When Bud returned to Moline he got reacquainted with Mildred Clubine. They were married March 8th, 1947 in Sedan, Kansas. They moved to Ark City, Kansas, where Bud worked in a meat packing plant. While in Ark City, two children were born, Linda and Larry.
They returned to Moline where Bud worked at the Moline Rock Quarry. In 1955, they moved to El Dorado. Bud worked at Skelly Refinery until he retired in 1985. After retirement, Bud was a driver for Meals on Wheels five days a week. He was a trustee at the First Baptist Church for many years. Bud was a perfectionist, doing handyman work. His motto was, “If you’re going to do the job, you do it right.”
Bud was a faithful member of First Baptist church for many years. He served on many committees at the church. Being a trustee at the church was his most rewarding job for the Church.
Bud was a devoted caregiver to Mildred. He was a very quiet, humble man. Colossians 3:12
Bud passed away on October 8, 2021 in Wichita, Kansas.
He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers. He is survived by his children, Linda Clark and Larry (Liz) McNown. Three grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) Creeden of Savannah, Georgia, Matthew (Melissa) Clark of Overland Park, Kansas, Mark (Alia) McNown of Syrause, Kansas; five great grandchildren, Cole, Reese & Grey Creeden, Addie & Cate Clark and Nyla & Cora McNown.
Memorials may be made out to Meals on Wheels.
Bud will have a graveside service at Sunset Lawns Cemetery on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 2:00 PM.
